The Trumpification of the Supreme Court of the United States
Author and journalist Ari Berman has recently published an excellent, timely new book, Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. It comes out at a time when the United States Supreme Court is intricately involved in — what many rational and fair-minded people consider to be — a blatant attempt to help Donald Trump in the 2024 Election.
A meticulously researched book, it examines many structural flaws in the United States Constitution, particularly several governmental institutions that have — for all intents and purposes — negated majority rule and established minority rule in the United States.
Words of Wisdom?
The Ultimate Jury
The mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, represented an extreme form of the central danger facing American democracy today: a blatant disregard for the will of the majority. But this crisis didn’t begin or end with Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
Through voter suppression, election subversion, gerrymandering, dark money, the takeover of the courts, and the whitewashing of history, reactionary white conservatives have strategically entrenched power in the face of a massive demographic and political shift.
Ari Berman charts these efforts with sweeping historical research and incisive on-the-ground reporting, chronicling how a wide range of antidemocratic tactics interact with profound structural inequalities in institutions like the Electoral College, the Senate, and the Supreme Court to threaten the survival of representative government in America.

Making It Up to Protect Trump
The strict constructionists on the United States Supreme Court don’t care about being “originalists” and faithful to the Constitution.
That’s just a talking point.
“The Supreme Court’s conservatives often accuse liberals of inventing provisions nowhere to be found in the Constitution. Now, the fingers are pointed in the other direction,” Politico reports.
“At the attention-grabbing arguments this week over Donald Trump’s claim of sweeping presidential immunity from criminal prosecution, the six-member conservative bloc seemed largely unconcerned by a key flaw in Trump’s theory: Nothing in the Constitution explicitly mentions the concept of presidential immunity.”
“The conservative justices have, over the years, seen harbingers of tyranny in union organizing, environmental regulations, civil-rights laws, and universal-health-care plans. When confronted with a legal theory that establishes actual tyranny, they were simply intrigued. As long as Donald Trump is the standard-bearer for the Republicans, every institution they control will contort itself in his image in an effort to protect him.” Link

Here is an excerpt from David Corn’s interview with Ari Berman in Mother Jones.
“Are we a democracy if we’re only relying on one party to uphold democracy? That seems a dangerous situation.”
Q. What are your biggest worries for the 2024 election?
A. That the anti-democratic movement that was unsuccessful in 2020 will be successful in 2024. They are now more strategic, and they are now being helped by a political system that advantages more conservative and more rural areas as opposed to more urban, more diverse, and more progressive areas. I’m concerned about the toxic combination of an undemocratic political system and an authoritarian leader who wants to take advantage of that political system. I wonder whether our institutions will hold again. Are we a democracy if we’re only relying on one party to uphold democracy? That seems a dangerous situation. What if the only party that will uphold democracy becomes unpopular for any number of reasons?
A lot of people feel like we dodged a bullet in 2020. But the gun is being reloaded right now. The effort to overturn the election in 2020 was disorganized. The anti-democratic movement is now more organized. It has a leadership and marching orders and people at all levels. If they want to stage an insurrection, they could stage a much more organized insurrection the second time around.

With a Major Assist from SCOTUS, Donald Trump Did This
As President Joe Biden travels around the country to empathize with the plight of women being denied basic reproductive services in many states around the country, Trump chimed in to say that everything was just fine.
“Donald Trump took his boast about overturning Roe v. Wade to a critical swing state Tuesday, even as he was stuck in court in New York City,” Los Angeles Magazine reports.
Said Trump: “When you look at it and you look at what’s happening all over the country now, states are voting. Ohio just voted. All different by the way. It’s tailor made, and it’s really working out well for people and they’re very, very happy.”
